New Forum to Strengthen Nevada Manufacturers
DECEMBER 9, 2019 By John Seelmeyer
A NEW FORUM hopes to strengthen the manufacturing sector across Nevada, and northern Nevada manufacturing and technology companies appear eager to embrace it. More than 100 representatives of manufacturing and tech companies attended a kickoff event in Reno a couple of weeks ago, and their enthusiasm encouraged its sponsor, Nevada Industry Excellence (commonly known as NVIE), in its plans to roll out the Manufacturing and Tech Forum statewide. Attendance at the kickoff was more than double what planners had expected. Mark Anderson, director of NVIE, says the forum will allow manufacturers to join forces to address big problems facing the rapidly growing sector — among them, training of a skilled workforce. In the last 12 months alone, manufacturers have added 2,000 jobs in Washoe County. The forum also is expected to allow manufacturers to share best practices. Few directly compete with one another, so they won’t be giving away their secrets to competitors. And Anderson says the forum is likely to open doors for manufacturers and tech companies to sell parts and sub-assemblies to other manufacturers in the state. Manufacturers in Nevada aren’t just big outfits such as Tesla and IGT. “We have hundreds, if not thousands, of small and medium-sized manufacturers across the state,” Anderson says, noting that the sector provides important diversification for Nevada’s economy. To learn more about the state’s manufacturers and their needs, NVIE will launch its Industry 4.0 survey early next year. A portion of the funding for the Manufacturing and Tech Forum comes from a Google Impact Challenge Award. NVIE now is among five Nevada organizations in the running for an additional $125,000 award in a public vote. (Details are at g.co/NevadaChallenge.) |
